Whenever friends ask me where they should stay in Lisbon, Príncipe Real is one of the first neighbourhoods I recommend.
Having lived in Lisbon for several years and worked as a tour guide, I’ve spent countless days wandering these elegant streets—stopping for coffee beneath the jacaranda trees, exploring independent boutiques, relaxing in the gardens and showing visitors corners of the city that many tourists never discover.
Príncipe Real manages to feel central without feeling overwhelming. It’s only a short walk from Bairro Alto, Chiado and Avenida da Liberdade, yet it has a much calmer atmosphere. Instead of noisy tourist crowds, you’ll find beautiful nineteenth-century buildings, stylish cafés, excellent restaurants, local wine bars and some of Lisbon’s best boutique shopping.

If you’re trying to decide where to stay in Príncipe Real, the biggest advantage is balance.
Many Lisbon visitors choose Baixa because it’s central or Bairro Alto because of the nightlife. Those areas certainly have their advantages, but they can also become crowded, noisy and very tourist-focused.
Príncipe Real offers something different.
It feels like a neighbourhood where locals actually live. Elegant apartment buildings sit beside trendy cafés, artisan bakeries and independent shops. Every corner seems to reveal another hidden courtyard, beautiful tiled façade or peaceful garden.
The location is also incredibly practical.

One of the reasons I consider Príncipe Real such a great base is that it gives you access to many of Lisbon’s highlights without feeling like you are staying in the middle of a tourist district.

1. Explore Jardim do Príncipe Real
The neighbourhood’s namesake garden is the perfect place to start.
Unlike some of Lisbon’s larger tourist attractions, this is a genuine local meeting point. Residents come here to read, chat, walk dogs and relax under the enormous cedar tree that dominates the centre.
On Saturdays, the garden hosts an organic market where you can browse local produce, handmade products and Portuguese delicacies.
It is especially beautiful in spring when Lisbon’s gardens come alive with colour.
2. Visit Embaixada Palace
One of Príncipe Real’s most unique buildings is Embaixada.
