If someone asked me where to stay for their very first visit to Lisbon, Baixa would almost always be my answer.
After living in Lisbon for several years and working as a tour guide, I spent countless days walking these streets. I crossed Praça do Comércio more times than I can remember, stopped for coffees around Rossio between tours, and regularly guided visitors through the elegant avenues that make Baixa one of Europe’s great historic city centres.
There’s something wonderfully convenient about staying here. You’re within walking distance of Alfama, Chiado, Avenida da Liberdade, Cais do Sodré and Bairro Alto. Metro connections are excellent, trams pass through constantly, and almost every major sightseeing attraction is close enough that you’ll spend more time enjoying Lisbon than travelling across it.
Of course, Baixa isn’t perfect. Some streets can feel busy during the middle of the day, restaurants immediately beside the main squares can be overpriced, and choosing the wrong hotel can mean street noise well into the evening.

Why Stay in Baixa?
Baixa is Lisbon’s elegant downtown district and, for many visitors, the most convenient place to stay.
Rebuilt after the devastating 1755 earthquake, the neighbourhood is famous for its perfectly organised grid of streets, grand plazas, impressive neoclassical buildings and pedestrian shopping avenues. Unlike the steep hills found elsewhere in Lisbon, Baixa is relatively flat, making it much easier to explore on foot.
One of the biggest advantages is location.

Baixa is also exceptionally well connected. Three metro stations serve the area, the famous Tram 28 passes nearby, trains leave Rossio for Sintra, and ferries across the Tagus are only a short walk away.
Accommodation has improved dramatically over the last decade. Baixa may not be the best choice if you’re primarily interested in nightlife. While bars are nearby, neighbourhoods like Bairro Alto and Cais do Sodré have a livelier evening atmosphere. Likewise, travellers seeking a more local residential feel may prefer Príncipe Real, Campo de Ourique or Estrela.

Still undecided? Here’s my honest advice after spending years living and working in Lisbon.
Choose Art Legacy Hotel if you want what I believe is currently the best all-round luxury hotel within easy walking distance of Baixa. It combines impeccable service, beautiful design and an unbeatable location.
Choose Hotel da Baixa if it’s your first visit to Lisbon. You really can’t go wrong. The location is outstanding, the rooms are comfortable and the staff consistently impress guests.
Choose Browns Central if you’re looking for the sweet spot between quality and price. It offers tremendous value without feeling like a compromise.
Choose The Ivens if you’re celebrating something special. Honeymoons, anniversaries and milestone birthdays deserve somewhere memorable, and few hotels in Lisbon feel as luxurious.
Choose Bairro Alto Hotel if dining, cocktails and rooftop views are just as important as sightseeing.
Choose Corpo Santo if exceptional hospitality matters more than flashy luxury.
Choose Rossio Garden Hotel or Be Poet if you’d rather save money on accommodation and spend it on experiences, restaurants and day trips.
Choose Memmo Príncipe Real if you’d like a quieter atmosphere while remaining close enough to walk into Baixa each day.

The Best Restaurants Near Baixa
One of the biggest advantages of staying in Baixa is that you’re surrounded by fantastic food. While there are plenty of tourist-oriented restaurants around Rossio and Rua Augusta, a short walk can reward you with much better meals.
Here are some of my favourites.
Cervejaria Ramiro
If you’re happy to walk around 15–20 minutes or take a quick taxi, Ramiro is one of Lisbon’s most famous seafood restaurants. Their garlic prawns, scarlet shrimp and giant tiger prawns are legendary, and for good reason.
Pinóquio
Just off Praça dos Restauradores, Pinóquio has been serving excellent Portuguese seafood and rice dishes for decades. It’s popular with both locals and visitors, so booking ahead is wise.
O Velho Eurico
One of Lisbon’s modern success stories. Traditional Portuguese comfort food is elevated without losing its authenticity. Expect generous portions and outstanding flavours.
Solar dos Presuntos
A Lisbon institution. If you’re looking for classic Portuguese cuisine in an elegant setting, it’s difficult to beat.
Taberna Sal Grosso
A little further towards Alfama, this small restaurant consistently serves some of the city’s most creative Portuguese dishes using seasonal ingredients.
Bonjardim (“Chicken House”)
Simple, affordable and famous for its charcoal-grilled chicken. It’s been a local favourite for decades.
Casa do Alentejo
Hidden inside one of Lisbon’s most beautiful buildings, Casa do Alentejo serves hearty dishes from Portugal’s Alentejo region. Even if you only stop for a drink, the building itself is worth seeing.

Tourist Mistakes to Avoid When Staying in Baixa
Baixa is one of the easiest parts of Lisbon to stay in, but after years of living in the city and showing visitors around as a tour guide, I’ve noticed the same mistakes happening again and again.
Avoiding these will make your trip noticeably better.
1. Eating on Rua Augusta Every Night
Rua Augusta is beautiful and absolutely worth exploring, but many of the restaurants directly on the pedestrian street cater almost exclusively to tourists. Menus are often similar, prices are higher than average, and the food can be fairly forgettable.
Instead, walk just five or ten minutes into Chiado, Mouraria or the quieter streets around Rossio. You’ll usually enjoy much better food for similar—or even lower—prices.
2. Assuming Everything is Flat
Baixa itself is wonderfully flat by Lisbon standards, but don’t let that fool you.
Walk in almost any direction and you’ll soon encounter steep hills leading towards Chiado, Castelo, Alfama or Bairro Alto. Comfortable shoes are absolutely essential.
3. Waiting Until the Last Minute to Book Attractions
Popular attractions such as Jerónimos Monastery, Pena Palace in Sintra, dolphin-watching trips and sunset sailing cruises frequently sell out during spring and summer.
👉 Reserve popular tours through Viator or GetYourGuide before arriving in Lisbon, especially if you’re visiting between April and October.
4. Ignoring Public Transport
Although Baixa is very walkable, don’t feel you have to walk everywhere.
The metro is clean, affordable and fast, while historic trams and funiculars are part of the Lisbon experience. A 24-hour transport ticket often pays for itself surprisingly quickly.
5. Forgetting That Shops Close on Some Holidays
While many tourist shops stay open, smaller local businesses may close on public holidays or Sunday afternoons.
If you’re planning to buy Portuguese ceramics, cork products or gourmet food gifts, don’t leave everything until your final afternoon.
6. Not Looking Up
Baixa’s streets are impressive at ground level, but some of the area’s finest details are above eye level.
Take time to admire the elegant Pombaline architecture, wrought-iron balconies, tiled façades and decorative stonework. It’s easy to rush through the neighbourhood without appreciating just how beautiful it really is.
7. Booking the Cheapest Hotel Without Reading Reviews
Central Lisbon has plenty of accommodation, but not all hotels offer the same experience.
Pay close attention to recent reviews mentioning soundproofing, room size, air conditioning and breakfast quality. Spending an extra €20–30 per night can sometimes transform your stay.
Local Etiquette Tips
Lisbon is a wonderfully welcoming city, and locals are generally patient with visitors. Still, understanding a few customs will help you fit in and enjoy warmer interactions.
Always Say Hello
When entering cafés or small shops, greet staff with a friendly “Bom dia” (good morning) or “Boa tarde” (good afternoon).
It’s a small gesture that locals genuinely appreciate.
Don’t Assume Everyone Speaks English
Many people in Baixa speak excellent English, particularly those working in tourism, but making a small effort in Portuguese is always appreciated.
Simple phrases such as:

- Obrigado / Obrigada
- Por favor
- Se faz favor
- Desculpe
go a surprisingly long way.
Tipping
Tipping isn’t compulsory in Portugal.
If you’ve received excellent service, leaving around 5–10% is generous and appreciated, but nobody expects American-style tipping.
Escalator Etiquette
On Lisbon Metro escalators, stand on the right and allow people in a hurry to pass on the left.
It’s a small detail, but locals take it surprisingly seriously!
Respect Residential Streets
Although Baixa is lively, many neighbouring areas are residential.
If you’re walking back to your hotel late at night through Chiado or Bairro Alto, keep noise to a reasonable level.
Watch for Trams
Historic trams are quieter than many visitors expect and often appear suddenly around corners.
Always check carefully before stepping into the road—even pedestrianised areas sometimes allow tram traffic.
Best Time to Visit Baixa
One of the advantages of staying in Baixa is that it’s enjoyable throughout the year, but each season offers a different experience.
Spring (March–May) ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
This is my favourite time to visit.
Temperatures are pleasant, flowers begin appearing across the city’s viewpoints and gardens, outdoor cafés become lively again and the summer crowds haven’t yet reached their peak.
Expect daytime temperatures between 18–25°C.
Summer (June–August) ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆
Summer brings long sunny days and fantastic evening atmosphere, but also the biggest crowds and highest hotel prices.
June is particularly lively thanks to Lisbon’s famous Santos Populares celebrations, when streets across the city fill with music, grilled sardines and neighbourhood parties.
Book accommodation as early as possible if travelling during this period.
Autumn (September–October) ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
September is another excellent choice.
The sea remains warm, temperatures are comfortable and visitor numbers begin to decrease.
Hotel prices often become slightly more reasonable too.
Winter (November–February) ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆
Winter in Lisbon is far milder than much of Europe.
You’ll still enjoy plenty of sunshine, and hotel prices are often considerably lower than during summer.
It’s an ideal time for city breaks, museums, restaurants and sightseeing without queues.
How Many Nights Should You Stay in Baixa?
This depends on how much of Lisbon—and Portugal—you’d like to experience.
2 Nights
Ideal if you’re simply enjoying a quick city break.
You’ll have enough time to explore Baixa, Chiado, Alfama and perhaps ride Tram 28.
3 Nights ⭐ Recommended
For most visitors, three nights strikes the perfect balance.
You’ll comfortably see Lisbon’s highlights while still enjoying excellent restaurants, viewpoints and evening strolls without feeling rushed.
4–5 Nights
Perfect if you’re planning day trips.
From Baixa it’s incredibly easy to visit:
- Sintra
- Cascais
- Belém
- Costa da Caparica
- Setúbal
without changing hotels.
One Week
If you enjoy slower travel, a week gives you time to explore Lisbon’s lesser-known neighbourhoods, visit museums, take food tours, enjoy river cruises and experience the city at a much more relaxed pace.
Where to Stay if Baixa is Sold Out
Because Baixa is one of Lisbon’s most popular areas, hotels can book out surprisingly early.
Fortunately, several nearby neighbourhoods make excellent alternatives.
Chiado
If your budget allows, Chiado is probably my favourite alternative.
Elegant, sophisticated and packed with fantastic cafés, theatres and boutique shopping, it’s only a few minutes’ walk from Baixa.
Perfect for couples and first-time visitors.
Príncipe Real
Quieter, greener and more residential, Príncipe Real offers beautiful boutique hotels, excellent restaurants and some of Lisbon’s best cocktail bars.
It’s ideal if you prefer a more relaxed atmosphere while remaining close to the centre.
Avenida da Liberdade
Lisbon’s luxury shopping boulevard is home to many of the city’s finest five-star hotels.
Choose this area if premium accommodation and high-end shopping are priorities.
Alfama
Perfect for travellers wanting authentic Lisbon character.
Expect narrow medieval streets, traditional fado restaurants and spectacular viewpoints—but also plenty of hills.
Cais do Sodré
A great choice for nightlife, riverside walks and excellent transport connections.
It’s particularly popular with younger couples and groups of friends.

Yes.
Baixa is one of Lisbon’s safest areas for tourists. Like any major European city, keep an eye on your belongings around busy squares, tram stops and public transport, but violent crime is very rare.

Accommodation tends to be among the most expensive in Lisbon because of the location, but restaurants and cafés range from budget-friendly to luxury depending on where you eat.
❓Is it noisy at night?
Usually less than people expect.
