A quick note on my picks
If I had to narrow the list down even further, Valverde Hotel remains my choice for the best all-round experience, particularly for couples who appreciate boutique character. For a truly special luxury stay, however, Tivoli Avenida Liberdade is a very compelling alternative to the Four Seasons, particularly if having a central Avenida address and an outdoor pool matters to you.
Meanwhile, Hotel Marquês de Pombal is the one I’d point budget-conscious travellers towards when they don’t want to compromise on location. It gives you easy access to Avenida da Liberdade and the Metro without the price tag attached to the area’s top luxury properties.

If you’re wondering where to stay in Avenida da Liberdade, the biggest advantage is balance.
Unlike Baixa, which can become incredibly busy during the day, or Bairro Alto, which stays lively well into the early hours, Avenida da Liberdade offers a calmer atmosphere while remaining incredibly central.
The avenue itself stretches for over a kilometre, connecting Restauradores Square with Marquês de Pombal. Inspired by the great boulevards of Paris, it features wide pavements, decorative mosaics, fountains, gardens and rows of mature trees that provide welcome shade during Lisbon’s hot summers.
You’ll also find many of Portugal’s most luxurious brands and international fashion houses here. Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Prada, Cartier and Rolex all have flagship stores along the avenue, giving the area an unmistakably upscale feel.
But Avenida da Liberdade isn’t only about luxury shopping.

Even though Avenida da Liberdade is one of the easiest areas of Lisbon to stay in, I still see visitors making the same mistakes time and time again. Having lived in Lisbon and spent years guiding people around the city, these are the tips I most often give friends before they visit.
1. Assuming It’s Only for Luxury Travellers
Because of the designer shops and five-star hotels, many people assume Avenida da Liberdade is completely out of their budget.
In reality, while you’ll certainly find some of Portugal’s most luxurious hotels here, there are also excellent four-star properties and several affordable options within a five to ten-minute walk of the avenue. Staying nearby often gives you almost exactly the same location for considerably less money.
2. Taking Taxis Everywhere
One of the biggest advantages of staying here is that you can walk to many of Lisbon’s highlights.
Rossio, Baixa, Chiado, Príncipe Real and even Bairro Alto are all within comfortable walking distance for most visitors. Save taxis for journeys to Belém, the airport or Parque das Nações.
3. Forgetting Lisbon Is Hilly
Although Avenida da Liberdade itself is relatively flat, once you start exploring nearby neighbourhoods you’ll quickly encounter Lisbon’s famous hills.
Comfortable walking shoes are absolutely essential. I always recommend leaving brand-new shoes at home—you’ll enjoy the city much more in footwear you’ve already broken in.
4. Only Eating on the Main Avenue
There are plenty of good restaurants on Avenida da Liberdade itself, but some of Lisbon’s best meals are found just one or two streets away.
Don’t be afraid to wander into the surrounding neighbourhoods. Within a five-minute walk you’ll discover family-run Portuguese restaurants, hidden wine bars and cafés that many tourists never notice.

Summer brings long sunny days, festivals and lively evenings.

Ideal for shopping, cafés, theatres and elegant city breaks.
One of Lisbon’s most charming neighbourhoods.
Príncipe Real
My favourite alternative.
Stylish, leafy and packed with fantastic restaurants, independent boutiques and beautiful gardens.
Marquês de Pombal
Usually offers slightly better hotel prices while remaining only a short walk from Avenida da Liberdade.
Excellent for business travellers.
Alfama
Perfect if you’re seeking Lisbon’s oldest and most atmospheric neighbourhood.
