This is the Lisbon of yellow trams climbing impossibly steep hills, elderly neighbours chatting from balconies, laundry fluttering overhead, hidden viewpoints, tiny family-run restaurants and the unmistakable sound of Fado drifting through medieval streets after dark.
Having lived in Lisbon for several years and worked as a tour guide, Alfama is still one of the areas I love wandering through the most. Every visit feels slightly different. One moment you’re standing beside the mighty São Jorge Castle looking over the city, and ten minutes later you’re completely lost down a tiny alley that somehow leads to another beautiful square, another church or another incredible viewpoint.
It’s magical—but it’s also very different from staying elsewhere in Lisbon.
The streets are steep, taxis can’t reach many hotels, and you’ll probably hear church bells, trams and late-night Fado performances. For some visitors that’s exactly what makes Alfama unforgettable. Others might prefer flatter neighbourhoods like Baixa or Príncipe Real.

Why Stay in Alfama?
If your dream is to experience the Lisbon you’ve seen in photographs, Alfama is probably the best neighbourhood in the city.
Unlike many European capitals that were rebuilt over centuries, Alfama survived the devastating 1755 earthquake better than almost anywhere else. Its maze of narrow medieval streets still follows the same layout from hundreds of years ago, creating an atmosphere that’s almost impossible to recreate elsewhere.
It’s also where you’ll find many of Lisbon’s biggest attractions, including the magnificent São Jorge Castle, the breathtaking Miradouro de Santa Luzia, the Lisbon Cathedral (Sé), the National Pantheon, the Fado Museum and countless hidden viewpoints.
The atmosphere changes throughout the day. Mornings are wonderfully peaceful before the crowds arrive. Afternoons become lively as visitors explore the winding lanes. Evenings belong to the neighbourhood’s famous Fado restaurants, candlelit terraces and quiet streets illuminated by old-fashioned lanterns.
One thing many first-time visitors underestimate is just how steep Alfama is. Beautiful? Absolutely. Easy? Not always.
Expect cobblestones, hills, steps and plenty of walking.
Personally, I think that’s part of the charm. Every corner feels earned, and every viewpoint feels like a reward.

The good news is that there aren’t many poor choices in this part of Lisbon. The biggest mistake isn’t choosing the wrong hotel—it’s waiting too long to book. Alfama has relatively few hotels compared to Baixa or Avenida da Liberdade, and the best ones can sell out months in advance.
The Best Restaurants Near Alfama Hotels
One of the biggest advantages of staying in Alfama is that you’re surrounded by some of Lisbon’s most traditional restaurants. While there are plenty of tourist-focused menus around the main viewpoints, it’s still very easy to eat exceptionally well if you know where to look.

- Mesa de Frades – A wonderful place to combine dinner with authentic Fado.

- Pois Café – Brilliant for breakfast, brunch or a relaxed lunch.
- Canto da Vila – Traditional dishes in a charming Alfama setting.
- O Pitéu da Graça (slightly further away) – Worth the short trip for generous Portuguese portions.
Many of these restaurants are small and highly popular, particularly on weekends. If you’re visiting between May and October, reserving a table in advance is always a good idea.
Things to Do Near Your Hotel
One of the joys of staying in Alfama is that you can explore much of Lisbon’s historic centre on foot. Some of my favourite nearby attractions include:
- Explore São Jorge Castle before the tour buses arrive.
- Watch sunrise from Miradouro das Portas do Sol.
- Visit Miradouro de Santa Luzia, one of Lisbon’s prettiest viewpoints.
- Wander through Alfama’s hidden alleys without a strict plan.
- Visit the Fado Museum to learn about Portugal’s most famous musical tradition.
- Explore the impressive Lisbon Cathedral (Sé).
- Browse antiques at Feira da Ladra on Tuesdays and Saturdays.
- Walk along the Tagus waterfront towards Praça do Comércio.
- Ride the famous Tram 28.
- Spend an evening enjoying authentic live Fado.

Tourist Mistakes to Avoid in Alfama
Even after countless visits, Alfama still surprises me. It’s one of those neighbourhoods where the smallest side street can become the highlight of your day. That said, there are a few mistakes I regularly saw visitors make while working as a tour guide—and avoiding them will make your stay much more enjoyable.
1. Underestimating the Hills
This is probably the biggest mistake.
On a map, Alfama looks compact, but those narrow medieval streets are steep. Really steep. If you’re carrying heavy luggage, arriving in the afternoon heat, or travelling with young children, allow extra time to reach your hotel.
If possible, pack light or consider taking a taxi as close as possible before walking the final few minutes.
2. Only Visiting During the Day
Many day-trippers leave Alfama by late afternoon.
In my opinion, that’s when the neighbourhood becomes even more magical.
As the crowds disappear, restaurants fill with locals, Fado music begins, lanterns illuminate the streets and the atmosphere becomes wonderfully peaceful. Staying overnight lets you experience a completely different side of Alfama that day visitors miss.
3. Eating at the First Restaurant with a View
Some restaurants near the major viewpoints rely almost entirely on their location.
Instead, wander just a few streets away and you’ll often find smaller family-run restaurants serving better food at lower prices.
Some of my favourite meals in Lisbon have been in tiny restaurants with handwritten menus and no river view whatsoever.
4. Trying to See Everything
Alfama isn’t a neighbourhood to rush through.
Rather than ticking off attractions one after another, leave time to get pleasantly lost. Sit at viewpoints, stop for coffee, browse local shops and simply enjoy wandering.
That’s where Alfama really shines.
5. Not Booking Attractions or Experiences
Summer can be extremely busy.
Popular Fado shows, food tours and guided walking tours often sell out, particularly between May and September.

Alfama isn’t an open-air museum—it’s a real residential neighbourhood where generations of Lisbon families still live.

- Don’t block narrow streets while taking photographs.
- Ask permission before photographing local residents.
- Respect private doorways and staircases.
- Dispose of rubbish properly.
- Support independent cafés, restaurants and local shops where possible.
These small gestures help preserve the neighbourhood’s unique atmosphere and make tourism more sustainable for everyone.
Best Time to Visit Alfama
There’s never really a bad time to stay in Alfama, but each season offers a different experience.
Spring (March–May)
Personally, this is my favourite time of year.
Temperatures are pleasant, flowers brighten the viewpoints and the crowds are still manageable compared to summer.
Summer (June–August)
Summer brings long sunny days and lively evenings.
June is especially exciting thanks to the Festas de Lisboa, when Alfama becomes one huge street party celebrating Saint Anthony. Expect live music, grilled sardines, dancing and an unforgettable atmosphere.
The downside is that accommodation prices reach their highest levels and hotels often sell out months in advance.
Autumn (September–October)
Another excellent time to visit.
The weather usually remains warm, tourist numbers begin to fall and hotel prices become slightly more reasonable.
Winter (November–February)
Winter is Lisbon’s quiet season.
You’ll enjoy fewer crowds, lower hotel prices and a more authentic local atmosphere. Although you may encounter occasional rain, Lisbon remains considerably milder than most of Europe.
For visitors focused on sightseeing rather than beaches, winter can offer exceptional value.
How Many Nights Should You Stay in Alfama?
I usually recommend spending three nights in Alfama.
That gives you enough time to:
- Explore the neighbourhood properly.
- Visit São Jorge Castle.
- Enjoy a Fado evening.
- Wander through hidden streets without rushing.
- Discover several viewpoints.
- Visit nearby Baixa, Chiado and Graça.
- Take a day trip if your itinerary allows.
If you’re visiting Lisbon for four or five nights, I’d happily spend the entire trip based in Alfama.
The neighbourhood has excellent transport links, and most of Lisbon’s main attractions are within walking distance or a short tram ride away.
Where to Stay if Alfama Is Sold Out
Because Alfama has relatively few hotels, availability can disappear surprisingly quickly, especially from April through October.
If your preferred hotel is fully booked, don’t worry. Several nearby neighbourhoods make excellent alternatives.
Baixa
Ideal if you want flatter streets, easy transport and convenient shopping while remaining within walking distance of Alfama.
Perfect for first-time visitors.
Chiado
Excellent for cafés, restaurants, shopping and nightlife while still offering easy access to Alfama.
A great all-round choice.
Príncipe Real
One of my personal favourite neighbourhoods.
Expect elegant boutique hotels, leafy gardens, fantastic restaurants and a more relaxed atmosphere while still being only a short ride from Alfama.
Avenida da Liberdade
Perfect for luxury hotels, designer shopping and wider, flatter streets.
Ideal if comfort and convenience are your priorities.
Graça
If you love viewpoints and authentic neighbourhoods but don’t mind hills, Graça offers a similar local feel with slightly lower hotel prices.

It’s not the flattest neighbourhood. It isn’t the easiest place to drag a suitcase. And if you’re looking for modern shopping centres or big chain hotels, you’ll probably be happier elsewhere.
But if you want to wake up to church bells, wander through streets that have barely changed for centuries, discover hidden viewpoints around every corner and spend your evenings listening to Fado over a glass of Portuguese wine, nowhere else comes close.
My overall recommendation remains Memmo Alfama. It strikes an outstanding balance between location, comfort, design and value, making it the hotel I’d suggest to most first-time visitors.
