The Top 20 Things To See In Lisbon
1. The Oceanarium
Lisbon´s Oceanarium is the second biggest in Europe and was named the best aquarium in the world in 2015, 2017, and 2018 making it a must-visit while you are here.
2. The Commerce Square
The commerce square is the biggest in Lisbon and sits at the bottom of the baixa down by the river. This whole area was rebuilt after the devastating earthquake of 1755.
3. Senhora do Monte Viewpoint
Lisbon´s highest natural viewpoint can’t be missed. It is from up here that you get a good idea about the size and layout of Lisbon. You can also watch the sun going down over the city.
4. Portas do Sol/Santa Luzia Viewpoints
They are side by side so visit both together. Both are equally charming and beautiful in their ways. With views of Alfama, bougainvilleas, and blue tiles, what more could you ask for?
5. Sao Pedro de Alcantara Viewpoint
From this splendid view from Bairro Alto, you look across Lisbon to the castle of Saint Jorge and the Graca neighbourhood
6. Edward 7th Park
Named after King Edward 7th of England. At the top of this beautiful garden, you have a view down the avenue and baixa to the river. It gives you a different perspective.
7. The Liberty Avenue
It is the main avenue in Lisbon and the most expensive in Portugal. Start at the Marques de Pombal roundabout and walk down to the Restauradores Square. It’s a nice stroll under the trees.
8. Rossio Train Station
Whether you are going to Sintra for the day or just grabbing a coffee from Starbucks, you can’t miss the Rossio train station in the middle of the city. Most visitors are surprised to learn this beautiful ornate building is a train station.
9. Santa Justa Elevator
The Santa Just elevator is a viewpoint above the rooftops of the flat downtown part of Lisbon. Unfortunately, however, there is always a long queue of people waiting to go up. But if you go to the Carmo convent, you can access the top of the elevator without waiting forever.
10. Carmo Convent
Ruins of the earthquake of Lisbon in 1755 and stage of the 1974 revolution. The Carmo Convent is one of the most historic and interesting monuments you can visit.

12. The Time Out Market
Originally the Mercado da Ribeira, it was one of the first food markets in Lisbon where people would go and buy their produce like fruit, veggies, and fish. Nowadays it is a place filled with restaurants where you can go and try any kind of typical Portuguese food. The problem is that because it is a cool place and everyone wants to go there it can get pretty packed. Luckily there are loads of options around so you won’t be hungry. It is still worth visiting though at least once.
They started the construction more than 500 years ago and it is the final resting place of Vasco da Gama.
Originally meant for a defense tower and later on serving as a ceremonial gateway during the age of the discoveries, you can’t miss the tower of Belem.
15. The Monument to the Discoveries
This final piece was completed in 1960 to commemorate the 500 years since Henry the Navigator (the guy who initiated the age of discoveries). On both sides, you have all the people who played an important role during the age of discoveries.
16. Augusta Street
The most walked down the street in all of Portugal. Start from Rossio Square and make your way down past the stores and restaurants before coming out under the arch of Augusta and arriving in Commerce Square.
17. The Three Funiculars
Bica, Gloria, or Lavra. They look like the tramps but don’t go around town, just up and down. Originally serving as an easier way for people to go up the hills, nowadays they are a popular tourist attraction
